When special people walk into your life, special things start happening. When Jose Manchola walked into our lives, brewing beer became bigger than just seeing happy faces enjoying their first sip. For the last 5 years, Melesa’s Wings has been honoring loved ones, raising money for cancer research and awareness, and bringing the beer community together on one special night every year.
Last year we had the privilege of hosting Melesa’s Wings at Alternate Ending. This year Jose and AE had the honor of brewing a beer with Craig Melvin on the Today Show, which raised 5k and is still going. And now, we are excited to join the Wings series alongside so many great breweries with a beer named for our (Scott and Alexis) father, Joel.
Joel’s Wings is an Imperial Stout inspired by my (Scott's) time at Other Half. I always loved baking Thai Banana for hours straight, and after making Magnolia Bread Pudding with my daughter Nora, we came up with an idea for a barrel-aged stout that incorporated toasted wild Thai banana, dried banana, and a whole lot of Tahitian vanilla. But we didn’t stop there! It’s no secret that we love Brazilian Amburana wood, so we added some spirals to get those wonderful gingerbread notes to enhance this beer even further.
Alas, you have Joel’s Wings, named for our father and inspired by one of his favorite movies of all time, Rocky. We will be donating $1,000 to the Melesa’s Wings Memorial Sloan Kettering Fundraiser.
While photographing Joel’s Wings this week, Jose and I shared a bottle, and when Jose said this was his favorite stout we have done so far, it put a big smile on my face. We toasted to Joel and reflected on the past while looking ahead to the future.
